acktung! is a map set for registered Wolfenstein, made by ack. It was released on December 17, 2003.
Genesis[]
Though ack had been making maps since the earliest days of Wolfenstein 3D, this was his first public release in his own name. Over the course of 2003 and 2004, ack had been and would continue to be a very prolific contributor to numerous mods such as Halls of Stonehenge and Operation: Letzterschutz.
acktung! was originally released with only 30 levels, completing the first three episodes, on September 27, 2003. Some of these maps date back to the mid-1990's. The final three episodes were newly made for the purpose of the set in late 2003 with its final release as a full 60-level replacement on December 17 that year.
Description[]
The map set features 60 levels that feature many of ack's trademarks and would-be trademarks; hanging vines, columns, many enemies on the run and symmetric and spiraling design but still with a lot of respect for the traditional Wolfenstein 3D map sets. Many secret areas are designed with pushwalls moving three squares in mind, which some sourceports might not recognize.
Legacy[]
A sequel, titled acktung! 2: The Last Waltz, was released in 2010.
