Barneystein 3D is a shareware Wolfenstein 3D mod by BlackAdder of PC-Crap intended as a parody of Barney the Dinosaur, the protagonist of a famous kids show. Absolutely reprehensible in every imaginable way. It is mentioned quite prominently in Masters of Doom when it discuses early Wolfenstein 3D mods.
The mod works with shareware Wolfenstein version 1.4, but an earlier release working with version 1.0 is also reported to exist.
Trivia
The version of Barneystein 3D that was distributed on old BBS systems came with a multitude of extra files, the most notable of which include:
- an analysis of Barney and Friends reposted from the alt.barney.dinosaur.die.die.die newsgroup;
- a novel-sized fictional story called The Day of the Barney, written by Brian Bull and edited by Firewing;
- a spinoff short story that ties in Barneystein 3D to the glorious work of art mentioned above.
This mod also inspired a Mac scenario of the same name by yyr. This scenario has redone graphics and 30 new levels.
