Latest revision as of 20:12, 14 September 2022

Coming of the Storm is a mod for registered Wolfenstein, made by Wolf Skevos-Jones. It was released on May 20, 2004.

Genesis[]

The mod was WSJ's first release for almost a year. As with most of his other releases, it was announced almost at the same time as it was released. The mod was updated on May 28, 2004 due to a coding bug that occasionally caused a crash after level 17; this version replaced the original version.

Description[]

19 levels are featured. Numerous new graphics and sounds appear, and for its time it was the mod with the largest number of sprites. Many new enemies, both Nazis as well as mutants, are featured. Following in the steps of Eisenritter and Totenkopf, it featured outside levels, dungeons, laboratories and castle levels; and new innovations, such as level 11, which takes place in darkness and fog. The final level also takes on a supernatural state. There are no secret levels.

A sizeable section of paranormal-inspired levels are featured as well, taking place in a cave environment, or in the case of level 16, a cathedral environment of sorts. Some influence come from both Return to Castle Wolfenstein as well as Hexen. New music is also featured, making for a particularly atmospheric play.

Reception[]

The mod was lauded upon release and would over time prove to be one of the most popular and well respected Wolfenstein 3D mods of all time. The sounds and graphics have been reused in countless mods, particularly in the following few years after initial release.

Remake[]

Towards the end of 2017 there was a short-lived attempt by Kloki38 trying to remake the mod in GZDoom. A demo followed the announcement[1] but soon after it disappeared in the shadows and got withdrawn due to Kloki38 favoring work on Shadow Over the Pathoras 3D. This remake was not endorsed by Wolf Skevos-Jones.

Ports[]

Orka put together and released an LZWolf port which was not endorsed by Wolf Skevos-Jones. In terms of future ports, Skevos-Jones has stated that any porting work or remake there might be on the table will be undertaken by himself.
