The DieHard Wolfers (DHW) community was launched on March 3, 2001 as a Yahoo! group. It was the brainchild of BrotherTank. Though similar groups existed at the time, and chat rooms had been set up by Brian Lowe, Parafriction and Chris Chokan at various times, it was the DieHard Wolfers community that in earnest became the first truly extensive gathering of Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny fans.
The group continued to be the main forum for communication between the many different modders of Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny for a time, concurrent with the Wolfenstein 3D Dome. Around this time, the Wolfenstein 3D Dome also started hosting its own message board, which was quickly overshadowed by the DieHard Wolfers' own message board, which became the DieHard Wolfers' Forum.
The message board opened in March 2003 as the Yahoo! group slowly came to a close, and would for roughly a decade become the main hub for communication between modders, coders, artists, mappers and fans of Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny. The forums were set up by MCS, hosted by AReyeP and maintained and kept in order by BrotherTank.
Though other forums popped up, closed down, or continued to exist in some way or other (most notably Wolf3D Haven in 2007), it was for many years the DieHard Wolfers' Forum that ruled the roost. The development and release of the popular End of Destiny helped maintain the excitement. It subsequently served as the incubator of community efforts such as the DieHard Wolfers series, Map Making Mania Melee, Wolf3D Community Map Pack, and the Map of the Month series, as well as the primary place of promotion for countless individual or team projects.
Starting in the early 2010's, as message boards in general became less popular due to more direct ways of instant communication, namely social media like Facebook and Discord, the DieHard Wolfers' Forum saw a decline in activity. Some also attribute this to the obsolete demands for member registration, including blocked e-mails, rigid restrictions on avatars and general backwardness of the phpBB system. It nevertheless remains a hub for a truly dedicated set of diehards with the occasional newcomer.
