Barneystein 3D is a mod for shareware Wolfenstein 3D, made by BlackAdder of PC-Crap. It dates to January 1994.

Versions[]

The Wolfenstein 3D Dome hosted the mod with the author simply listed as PC-Crap, featuring only three files; VSWAP, Read Me and a DIZ file. The VSWAP was assigned a dummy date of January 1, 2000 and featured a Read Me which seem to indicate that Colonel Bill might have compiled the set for Dome release.

A similarly titled set was also hosted on the Dome, though this featured different graphics and only worked with shareware Wolfenstein v1.0. This set was located by Andy Nonymous. These two sets often get confused.

Description[]

The set replaces only graphics and sounds. Protagonists are now Beavis and Butt-Head, with Barney replacing Hans Grosse. Numerous new walls come from Spear of Destiny and Blake Stone, with many textures also alluding to MTV.

Legacy[]

The version from the Wolfenstein 3D Dome featured basically only the VSWAP.

The version of Barneystein 3-D that was distributed on old BBS systems came with a multitude of extra files, mainly batch files; the most notable of which include:

  • an analysis of Barney and Friends reposted from the alt.barney.dinosaur.die.die.die newsgroup;
  • a novel-sized fictional story called The Day of the Barney, written by Brian Bull and edited by Firewing;
  • a spinoff short story that ties in Barneystein 3-D to the glorious work of art mentioned above.

The set is mentioned quite prominently in Masters of Doom when it discusses early Wolfenstein 3D mods. It would also serve as the inspiration for a Mac scenario of the same name by yyr. This scenario has redone graphics and 30 new levels.
