This mod should not be confused with Gorenstein II: The Gore Spear.

Gorenstein 2: Attack of Josef Hitler is a mod for registered Wolfenstein, made by Sam Feichter. It was released on May 19, 2001.

Genesis[]

With the demise of Gorenstein II: The Gore Spear in early 2000, Feichter returned to the scene after a few months' absence to begin work on a different sequel to Gorenstein. On August 20, 2000, Gorenstein 2: Escape From Dr. Schmuck was announced. Over the next couple of months, some updates on the set would be posted, mainly concerning the new weapons. On April 19, 2001 it was stated that Feichter's computer had experienced a crash and that work on the mod would have to begin anew. At this point, James Ingham was involved with source code assistance, with Feichter also being involved in Ingham's Project: Verdammt, an oft-discussed mod throughout 2001. Some of the planned coding changes would include new weapons inspired by Goldeneye 64.

The first actual release of Attack of Josef Hitler came about on May 19, 2001. The release featured 5 levels, and numerous new graphics; though the list of changes were long, these changes were mainly graphical and no coding changes were featured in the download. This version was listed as being v1.0 Beta. A few days later, an updated version was released with a different VSWAP. In June, it was stated that Ingham would be putting together some simple source code editing, such as the addition of a missile launcher. Its frames had already been added to the VSWAP in the initial May 19 release.

On August 16, 2001 an update was posted where it was mentioned that the source code editing was stalled due to Ingham being unavailable. Instead, Feichter threw himself into a different project, Heil Hitler!!!. No news were heard on the project until December 20, 2001 where a full episode version was posted containing 9 levels. As Ingham's involvement in the Wolfenstein 3D modding scene came to an end, coding changes for Attack of Josef Hitler were eventually undertaken by Brian Lowe; however, the EXE containing these changes remains lost.

On February 17, 2002 it was stated by Feichter that the entire project had been lost and that a fresh start was imminent. On June 20, 2002 progress was slowly moving forward, with another mention of the Goldeneye 64 weapons that were planned to be used in the mod. A new title screen was posted two days later. On July 10, 2002 Feichter had an entirely different project in the pipeline, Castle of Doom, which was held back for release as he wanted to finish the second episode of Attack of Josef Hitler first. This proved to be the final sign of life of Gorenstein 2: Attack of Josef Hitler.

G2062002

This title screen was posted on June 22, 2002 but was never used in a publicly available version.

G2052001

This title screen was only featured in the May 19, 2001 version.

Description[]

The mod features 9 new levels, played in Episode 1, and numerous new graphics and sounds. In addition to the many different VGA graphics (including a slimy green status bar) the new graphics mainly had their origins in the Spear Mission Packs, though a guard from Operation: Body Count was also edited to fit. Though the mod was meant to include a number of coding changes and many more different graphics, its long and troubled history prevented this from happening.

Release history[]

For some reason, the May 24, 2001 5-level version featured as the prevalent download though the December 2001 version contained a full, finished episode. In the download section below these are alluded to as being May and December versions, respectively. Though coding changes were initially featured, all three available versions feature the same EXE dated 1995; this is the standard Wolfenstein 3D EXE without any coding changes.

Legacy[]

Many years later, some levels were recycled for the ECWolf compilation WOLFPAK.
