Health Items are pick-ups which can be collected by the player to replenish health. They are an essential part of surviving in the Wolfenstein games.

The ItemsEdit

Health items generally come in 3 different flavors: dog food, food, and health packs. Each gives more health than the last.

Blood and GibsEdit

Blood and gibs, while usually appearing as decorative props, can also be consumed to replenish 1% health if the player's health is below 11%.

Power UpEdit

The Power Up, while having the additional benefits of giving the player an extra life and 25 bullets, also restores the player's health to 100%. This makes the Power Up important to consider strategically as a health item, especially considering that it's the only health item which can be picked up when the player is already at full health.

NotesEdit

  • In most modern releases of Wolfenstein 3D or Spear of Destiny the red cross on the Health Packs is replaced with a red heart due to American Red Cross and The Canadian Red Cross began cracking down on the use of their emblem in video games.
  • To optimize health consumption, the player should exercise caution about which items they collect and when. For example, if the player has 90% health they should not consume a 25% health pack because then 15% health goes to waste as the player's health caps at 100%. Instead, they should either find a pickup which gives 10% or less, or they can wait until they receive enough damage that none of the 25% is wasted.
  • In the boss levels in Wolfenstein 3D there are often secrets which contain a ludicrous number of health packs. If the player lures the boss into one of these rooms the player can easily fire upon the boss without taking cover, simply moving from health pack to health pack as the boss returns fire.
