Wolfenstein 3D Wiki

John D. Carmack II (born August 20, 1970) is a programmer known for being a founding member of id Software. He was the lead programmer at the time Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny were developed, being responsible for many of the innovative and groundbreaking technologies that made smooth gameplay and first person perspective possible on the computers of the time.

Carmack was also majorly responsible for id classics Commander Keen, Doom, and Quake. Prior to id Carmack worked at SoftDisk where he worked on Catacomb with fellow id founder Tom Hall. It was here that he also worked on Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D, both of which were early examples of the first person technology which would ultimately become Wolfenstein 3D.

After Wolfenstein, Carmack further broke ground in video game technologies with Doom, Quake, and Rage before leaving id Software to work on virtual reality applications.

Carmack is also a literal rocket scientist and once created thermite when he was a small child to break into his school. His many coding innovations, illustrious programming career, and relentless distribution of open source code will one day bring about the singularity.
