Northern Darkness is a mod for registered Wolfenstein, made by Mäx. It was released on August 19, 2007.
Description[]
The mod features 25 levels spread across three episodes. The environment is influenced by black metal, and enemies are white youths in hip-hop regalia, priests, police cars and Voorhees Jason-like characters in hockey masks.
All of the graphics, sounds and music have been replaced, and the mod is unique in the respect that it focuses on black metal and even uses the guitar as a weapon. The protagonist is in full make-up with long, shaggy black hair which makes for an uniquely atmospheric and foreboding gameplay.
Genesis[]
Work on the project started as early as February 2006. More or less made by Mäx all on his own, one Kevin is credited with the mapping for Episode 3. Beta testing chores were taken care of by MrWolf. The soundtrack was based on a Blood-related stop-motion project entitled Duke vs. Caleb which was likewise composed by Mäx.
Homages[]
Black metal groups alluded to in the graphics include Gorgoroth, Finntroll and 1349. The title of the mod could both allude to the record company of the same name specializing in the black metal genre, as well as Norwegian group Immortal's Sons of Northern Darkness.
