Story

Nukes have already fallen.

But on the fiftieth anniversary of America's nuclear defeat, in the year 2020, a new threat emerges. As the military-industrial structures of the world continue to churn, nuclear weapons become more accessible to any second-rate terrorist group... and the number of nuclear detonations in hot zones around the world skyrockets. As more factions acquire nukes, the world edges closer to self-destruction, yet the powers of the world do nothing.

In secret, an elite Navy SEAL and a Russian state police operator defect, disillusioned by the failure of their countries to do anything to stop this emerging enemy. Acting outside of any national authority, they are all that stands in the way of global nuclear war.

Design

Phantom: 2020 represents an ambitious departure from traditional Wolfenstein 3D design for the author. Where normally one might expect that all keys on a level are required, this is not the case in P2020; often, there is more than one of a particular type of key in a level, and even then, there are often alternate exits which do not require keys at all. Levels are designed around the idea that almost every area in the game should be optional, to the extent that a single level may represent anywhere from two to thirty minutes of gameplay, depending on how much the player desires to explore rather than how much they are required to. Challenges on a room-to-room basis are designed around two playable characters, each representing a different playstyle with different strengths and weaknesses.

This mod is currently in development with a target of 3 episodes of eight regular levels and one secret level apiece, structured identically to Doom. Think "Command Center from Doom 27 times" and you have a fairly accurate representation of the level of nonlinearity and replayability that is intended by the author.

Technical

The mod makes heavy use of ECwolf and LZwolf features, in particular billboard sprites, to create illusions that include several maps which take place underwater and non-uniform level topology. See the gallery below.non-uniform level topology. See the gallery below.

"Borrowed" from Other Games

Phantom: 2020 uses a number of graphics and features taken directly or modified from other games:

  • Rise of the Triad
  • Shadowcaster
  • Strife
  • Heretic
  • Blake Stone (both games)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Battlefield 3
