Rise of the Triad (also known by its abbreviation ROTT) is a game which was made by Apogee and released as shareware in December 1994 with the full version coming out two months after. The shareware is subtitled The Hunt Begins and has levels differing from the full release.
The game plays in the same vein as DOOM, featuring fast movement, textured floors, ceilings and parallax skies, and uses platforms and movement on more than one plane, dissimilar to that of Wolfenstein 3D.
Material from the game has been used in countless mods, including the hi-res guards, the music, some textures and some of the weaponry.
Furthermore, a set of guards were also made, inspired by the game, and these were put together by MajikMonkee and featured heavy in numerous mods beginning in 2004.
Source ports and modding[]
ROTT's source code was released on December 20th, 2002.[1] Thanks to this release fans have created a few source ports over the years to varying success. The game has received several modding tools over the years but due to the small community and the growth of Doom modding not much has come to fruition. Despite all this many user levels exist, especially for the COMM-BAT multiplayer modes.
Remaster[]
On 6th September 2020, 3D Realms announced a remastered version by the polish developers Destructive Creations.
