Wolfenstein 3D Wiki

Three prototypes of Rise of the Triad, by Apogee Software, were leaked to the public in 2023. They, more or less, showcase the transition from Wolfenstein 3D: Part 2 to Rise of the Triad. Long before the prototypes were released fans have attempted to re-create the original vision by utilizing the original design specs article on 3D Realms' Website; one of the fan attempts being Wolfenstein 3D Part 2: Rise of the Triad, which is being revisited in light of these betas.

  • Runs at a very high framerate (not locked?) [Set DosBox to about 15000 cycles].
  • Uses WAD file for graphics.
  • DOS/4G built-in
  • No audio
  • Masked walls
  • Animated walls
  • Animated sprites
  • Sprites have shifted pixel patterns (torch especially). Similar to the pixel column drawing in Blake Stone (except AoG 1.0)
  • Shading (Only floors and walls. Sprites aren't affected)
  • Floor/Ceiling Textures (Inaccurately shifting around in 320x240. Bit like in Operation Bodycount)
  • Simple movement physics
  • The player can walk through doors, but cannot open them.
  • Guards open doors, but walk through before they finish opening.
  • Quits to DOS if the player enters NEWGAME while being ingame and prints a few values (fps, player angle, foc).
  • MAP.DAT: perhaps the level in text format for the automap?
  • FTABLES4.DAT: Shading table? Deleting doesn't seem to have any effect.
  • NEWTABLE.DAT: Colorpal file for shadows in the menu. Deleting it makes the shadows black.
  • MAPTEMP contains 1 level.
  • Several objects and walls not used on the map (see custom level).

Glitches:

  • leaking white floor pixels
  • the last column of a wall has different shade
  • occasional sprite column or wall column glitches
  • sprite clipping issues
  • build has some max sprite drawing issues or distance drawing issues
  • freezes and crashes on various things
