Wolfenstein 3D Wiki

WOLF1A is a map set for shareware Wolfenstein, made by Bryan Baker. It was released on December 15, 1992.

Description[]

10 levels are featured, all quite large in size and seemingly built from scratch. Many maps go almost to the limit of 149 enemies and 399 static objects. Extravagant designs such as diagonal areas, secret areas accessed from more than one part in the map and such were somewhat unusual for 1992.

The mod uses shareware Wolfenstein v1.0.

Later versions[]

On January 31, 1993, a slightly updated version was released, entitled WOLF1B. Some maps had been retouched. Likewise, the format was changed from MAPTEMP to GAMEMAPS (with a descriptive document attached detailing this process and the different versions) as this was now shareware Wolfenstein v1.4.

Legacy[]

Wolf1A's maps have been used in numerous projects over the years. This may be caused by its wide availability on both the BBS scene and various download sites, both before, after and during the halcyon days of the Wolfenstein 3D Dome. In 1994 it was featured as set P in the Wolfmaster pack (using the rather dour title Wolfenstein 3D Add-On), and levels 2-10 had also appeared as Episode 5 levels 2-10 in Wolfen60. Herein it was mentioned that Bryan Baker was the author, something the original 1992 WOLF1A omitted to mention. As such, as Baker was involved with creating MapEdit, the rather extravagant designs make sense.
