Wolfen60 is a map set for registered Wolfenstein, made by various contributors and curated by Warren Buss. Its most recent release came out on July 23, 1993. An earlier version had apparently been available but had a mapping bug on E1M9.

Description[]

60 maps are featured, and these have been compiled using various sets that were available at the time, or soon would be. Some originals by MapEdit creators Dave Huntoon and Warren Buss are also featured, but the bulk comes from previously available sets such as:

Most of these have been edited to fit, certainly in the case of Temporary Insanity maps that relied heavily on pushwalls, marching enemies and using the Wolfenstein 3D engine's anomalies. Operation: Overkill would not be released until June 1994, and Penn noted in that mod's Read Me that the maps he made for Wolfen60 were early versions of those two Operation: Overkill maps.

Though Huntoon, Penn, Benjamin Rudiak-Gould and The Maverick were credited the other contributors were merely listed as unknown designers. E3M2-8 and E4M6-7 look similar in design and have most likely been put together by Warren Buss.

Legacy[]

Some mods would later be based around Wolfen60, which was particularly appealing to people who had not yet acquired the registered version of Wolfenstein 3D, or had mangled the files for whatever reason. Wolfen60 was heavily featured on numerous download sites and the BBS scene. Most, if not all of the maps would also later appear in the Wolfmaster set in 1994.

The set was a massive influence on Barry Christian who would title his first mod WLF3D_60 after the set.

Colonel Bill compiled/hosted six shareware sets dubbed Map Set 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 that apparently were edited versions of each Wolfen60 episode.
