Wolfenken is a mod for registered Wolfenstein, made by Kenny Roels, who also went by the name RKS Kenny. It was uploaded on the Dome on May 27, 2002 along with Roels' two other mods, Dark Dungeon I & II.

Genesis[]

Apparently most of the mod was finished by August 2001. Roels had his own Wolfenstein 3D site which hosted mods, and this is where the mods were first located before being uploaded on the Dome.

Description[]

32 levels are featured, though 34 are actually playable in the original DOS version, even if this might have been unintended. The mapping design is quite varied. Almost all of these are Roels originals, though The Final Solution's opening level is used without credit as E5M1. Furthermore, two maps from 1992's WOLFEP12 have been edited to fit, most notably E1M1. The mod also uses sounds unique to this mod, including all guard sounds. One death scream is taken from a song by Prince, Sexy M.F. Most sounds are humorous, with many death screams being silly, or speech mangled via a sound editor.

Sprites have been borrowed from other games (e.g. a health vial from Heretic, as seen on the screenshot). Some walls have been changed, with quite a few of them being unique to the mod.

The only coding changes are the episode names, which have all been changed to "Play It". This same EXE was also used for Roels' other mods, Dark Dungeon I & II. This EXE dates from the same date the mods were made available on the Dome, and may have been made simply because Roels was skeptic about using the registered version's EXE.

Bugs and ports[]

Certain parts of the mod were inaccessible due to the high presence of Hitler ghosts and static objects, with frequent crashes due to the "No free spots in objlist!" bug. This was squashed in the SDL version, which was put together by Andy Nonymous in close collaboration with Thomas Weiling, a long-time fan of the mod who championed its SDL release, seeing Wolfenken as somewhat a forgotten oddball classic mod. The SDL port was released on Christmas Day 2013.

The author[]

Kenny Roels had his own Wolfenstein 3D site which hosted his own mods, other mods, and editors (link below). Roels also used photos of himself as textures in the mod. Other textures remain unique to the mod, e.g. Pharaoh textures, concrete slabs, outer space designs and tweaks to doors.
